"I need clients but I hate chasing after them."

“I need clients but I don’t like to sell” “I am not a pushy sales person!” “I am not a marketing person!” “I became an attorney so that I could be a professional and I wouldn’t have to worry about menial tasks like marketing and selling!”
Juan was ranting on like a mad man, coming up with all the excuses he could muster up to explain to me why his business was failing after 3 years. Juan came to me for a complimentary Coaching Consultation after we met in a networking event. I quickly realized that although Juan was a young attorney, he was extremely bright and knowledgeable in his field. However, Juan never learned Marketing and Sales in college. Juan decided to become an attorney because he wanted to be an ‘entrepreneur’. He found out, the hard way, that just because he got his License to practice law does not mean he will become a ‘successful’ attorney. He had no idea about marketing and even less about Attraction Marketing!
His biggest concern when he came to me was about how he can get clients so that he can pay for rent on his office, the receptionist and all his other expenses.
When Juan first came to me I asked him, “can you define, specifically, who is your targeted client?” He had a ‘general’ idea. Then I asked him, “What are your client’s needs?” He was vague with his explanation. I then asked Juan to explain to me, “How do you provide solutions to your client’s needs?” He began given me a list of features – things he does for his clients – not benefits!
I proceeded to ask him more details about his business at which point he just began squirming on the chair and telling me that I was acting like a prosecutor, that maybe I should go into law.
I laughed and explained to him that a good coach is a good inquirer.
I told him, “I am going to help you and in order to help you; I need to understand as much about your business as I possibly can”. I also need to know, how much you, understand your business! After much questioning, I found out that Juan had some understanding about his business but little to no understanding about how to market his services.
“It’s ok, I will help you” I assured him. “We will first have to start shifting your beliefs about what tasks you can and cannot do as part of your job as a professional attorney and about how you label marketing and sales as “menial” task. Sales and marketing is the cornerstone of anyone, like me and you, in the professional services business. If you like me, intend to stay afloat in this economy, you need to take on the task of marketing your business every day!
“What? said Juan.
No, no, that’s not what I want! I want you to do it for me!
I explain to him how I work; “I teach a simple system of using Metaphysical and/or Spiritual Principles (i.e. Law of Attraction) to control your mindset along with very practical techniques of doing low cost or no cost marketing every day so that you can run your business effectively and enjoy doing what you do best.”
After I assured him that what I was going to teach him was very easy and that anyone could do it. He asked me for some examples; I began asking him to write down everything he knew about his client’s personality and needs. Then I told him I would pretend I was a client coming to him for services. I began, “Let me review what I like or dislike about your offerings? Let me see how your offering meets my needs?” Juan was a quick learner; he quickly understood where I was coming from. Then he said, but Coach Evie that’s just the easy part “understanding my client’s mind-set, but how about actual marketing techniques?’ “Of Course” I said, “let’s take a look at your basic marketing materials, what do you have right now with you? What do you carry with you at all times that tell me that you are in business?
“Oh, oh, well, I was not prepared for you to review my marketing material; all I have is my business card!” (Does this sound familiar?)
Most “Solo” Entrepreneurs in the Professional Services Business do a major disservice to themselves by not being open and available for business 24/7. What I mean by that is that many professionals forget to always carry their storefront with them! What do I mean by that? When you don’t really have a storefront, what marketing materials do you have that you can easily access and let anyone and everyone know about your services? Well, at best you like Juan probably always carry a business card. What does your business card look like? Is it attractive? Do people keep your business card? Do people call you from your business card? Do people comment on your business card? Do people remember you from your business card? In other words, are your business cards memorable?
Well, Juan’s complimentary coaching consultation was over and he was looking at me with discontent as he said, “that’s it?” you are going to leave me hanging? Of course not, I said I would help you and I let him know about The Client Manifestation™ Course. I told him, “The Client Manifestation™ Course will provide you with a Hands-On, Step-by-Step Guide designed to help you make Money with a Fast, Fun and Easy to Follow Marketing Plan I call "The Client Manifesto".
